Wondering what makes this destination so special? If you’re visiting Concord, Kannapolis, Harrisburg, Midland or Mt. Pleasant, NC, here are attractions and activities to try that are unique to Cabarrus County, North Carolina.
Charlotte Motor Speedway
Experience the excitement of this legendary 1.5-mile superspeedway during a major NASCAR event or on a daily tour! The campus also encompasses The Dirt Track and zMAX Dragway– the world’s first four-lane, all concrete drag strip. Known as the “Bellagio of Drag Strips,” zMAX hosts National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) events twice a year with four-wide action in the spring and side-by-side racing in the fall.
The Dale Trail
Whether you’ve been a fan of the Intimidator all of your life or are just now learning about this legendary stock car driver, The Dale Trail guides you through the life and legacy of Dale Earnhardt Sr. Cruise through the streets of his hometown in Kannapolis and taste a tomato sandwich just the way Dale liked it. This self-guided tour also takes you around the region to stops like Richard Childress Racing and Dale Earnhardt, Inc.
NASCAR Race Shops
Before the green flag waves, step inside the facilities where it all begins. See crews working behind-the-scenes inside NASCAR Race Shops, discover racing history inside museums, and take home authentic memorabilia and the latest gear from team stores. Nearby Charlotte Motor Speedway, you’ll find teams like Chip Ganassi Racing, Hendrick Motorsports, Roush Fenway Racing and Stewart-Haas Racing.
Reed Gold Mine
This state historic site is where the first documented discovery of gold happened in the United States! Learn about the storied history from exhibits in the Visitor Center, then try your luck panning for a fleck of gold (open April to October each year). Whatever you find is yours to keep! Then, tour the underground mine tunnels and cool off with the natural AC– a special treat when the weather heats up in spring and summer.
Southern Grace Distilleries
Tour the country’s first distillery located inside a former prison. Built in 1929, the old jail has been re-purposed and is now home to award-winning whiskey. Learn how the spirits are crafted, and try one of their many offerings at the solitary confinement tasting bar from the original 130-proof Sun Dog Corn Whiskey and popular Pink Lemonade flavor to Conviction Bourbon.
North Carolina Music Hall of Fame
Explore the stories of our state’s music industry greats with exhibits from artists like Charlie Daniels, Roberta Flack, Ronnie Milsap, Kellie Pickler, The Avett Brothers and many more. Special items donated by the inductees are on display year-round in the museum. Listen to the tunes that shaped North Carolina’s musical heritage, then join us to witness music history at the next Induction Ceremony in October.
