12-year-old Conrad Reed made the nation's first gold discovery at Reed Gold Mine in 1799. The 17-pound nugget was used as a doorstop for three years before his father sold it for $3.50. Tour the Visitors Center, restored underground tunnels and reconstructed stamp mill. Hike and explore the Talking Rocks Trail. See gold mining exhibits. Try your luck panning for gold (panning seasonal May-Oct). National Historic Landmark.

Directions:
From Concord: Take Hwy 29 South to U.S. 601 south to N.C. 200. Turn left on N.C. 200 to Reed Mine Road at Georgeville. Turn right, go approximately three miles, and the site will be on the left.
Hours:
Apr-Oct Tue-Sat 9am-4pm. Nov-Mar Tue-Sat 10am-4pm. Closed major winter holidays.
