Day 2: Go for Gold—Sample sweet White Gold and pan for the yellow kind.
Pack a picnic basket and strap in for the scenic drive through Cabarrus County’s back roads. Less than 30 minutes away from Concord, Midland, NC is home to family-owned Rocky River Vineyards. At the Tasting Bar, sample Muscadine wines, Chardonnay, Merlot and Cabernet sauvignon, then pick up your favorite in the gift shop along with creations from regional artisans. Lounge on the porch or take the self-guided walking tour—the map is complete with a list of creatures you’re likely to meet along the way!
When you’re minutes away from the site of the first discovery of gold in the US, it’s hard not to stop and see where it all began. While in Midland, carve out some time to navigate the underground mine tunnels and pan for gold at Reed Gold Mine.
Head back to town for one last glass! Located in the quaint city of Kannapolis in Cabarrus County, Brew is a local favorite. Having dinner inside the historic Durham home (or on the deck with live music!) is an ideal way to end the weekend— relaxed and carefree. Not ready to head home just yet? Take in another historic must-see in Kannapolis. Stroll down Main Street and catch a movie at the Gem Theatre, one of the oldest single-screen movie theatres still in operation.
